Beyond Oktoberfest: Fall Beer

fall beer   You know and love fall beers, and sampled much of the glut of German- and American-brewed Märzen lager cashing in on the season. We’ve found some “next level” fall beers for when the blue-and-white Bavarian flags and lederhosen are packed away for another year.

Capital (WI) • Autumnal Fire • Dopplebock

Capital’s Oktoberfest just won gold at GABF, and their German-style skill shows in Autumnal Fire. A limited edition brewed with Brewers, Munich and Honey malts, this dopplebock conveys a complex, lingering sweetness with Hallertau and Mittelfruh hops, not unlike our favorite month of the year. Easy drinking, yet sophisticated.

Ommegang (NY) • Scythe & Sickle • Harvest Ale

Oh, amber waves of grain. A celebration of the craft and care of farming, Scythe & Sickle is brewed with barley, oats, wheat and rye. These mixed malts — particularly Cooperstown, New York-native rye — added a bright amber color and creamy mouthfeel, and balance delicate hops and yeast. Reminiscent of a Bière de Garde, or “beer for keeping,” traditionally brewed in the spring when natural yeasts was more predictable, aged over summer and enjoyed in autumn.

Summit Unchained (MN) • Herkulean Woods • Lager with Maple and Spruce

Brewed with lager yeast that works its magic at higher temperatures, it doesn’t get much more Upper Midwest than Herkulean Woods.  Summit brewer Christian Dixon combined Minnesota malts and maple syrup with spruce tips from Iowa in this steam beer. Also known as a California Common, this style is a throwback to frontier days when refrigeration wasn’t always available to produce an easy-drinking, workingman’s beer. You’re a lumberjack, and that’s OK.

Potosi (WI) • Stingier Jack • Rye Whiskey Barrel-Aged Imperial Pumpkin Ale

You want pumpkin? We’ve got pumpkin. The excellent Stingier Jack starts out as a imperial pumpkin ale, with the added wickedness of aging in Templeton Rye whiskey barrels. Aptly named for one of Halloween’s greatest folktales, this beer shrewdly balances wholesome holiday flavor with delighted debauchery.
