Helioterra Winemaker Anne Hubatch at Story Hill BKC

Join us for a special walk-around wine tasting featuring a Wisconsin native winemaker making great wines in Oregon.

Anne Hubatch grew up in Sheboygan, before moving onto the University of Wisconsin and Oregon wine country. After working with some of Oregon’s best winemakers for more than a decade, Anne introduced her own label, Helioterra, in 2009.

We’ll be tasting 12 of Anne’s wines, matched with food pairings stations by the Story Hill BKC culinary team. Monday, April 17, 6 p.m. Reservations at 414-539-4424 or reservtions@storyhillbkc.com. $60 includes tasting, food, and gratuity; tax not included.

Give the Gift of Whiskey

whiskey-wall

We have a wall full of whiskey gifts, including some unique, rare and hard-to-find whiskeys. Look to the West wall, just through the Hobbit hole, for some tremendous whiskeys.

Booker’s Rye is really the crown jewel, recently named “World Whisky of the Year” for 2017 by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible. It’s aged 13 years, and beat out 1,240 new whiskies for the honor, by being “simply a staggering example of magnificent rye showing exactly what genius in terms of whiskey actually means.”

Whistle Pig 15-year Rye is the distillery’s oldest whiskey, aged in repurposed bourbon barrels before being finished in new barrels built from oak grown on its own Vermont farm.

Or, go for Whistle Pig 12-year Old World Rye. What they mean by “Old World” is that it’s finished in old Sauternes, Madeira, and Port barrels.

We love Michter’s, and had the pleasure of some of their premium offerings at Maxie’s Michter’s Whiskey Dinner in February. You can find them here, including Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye and Michter’s 10-year Bourbon.

Maxie’s also hosted a High West Whiskey Dinner this year, and we have a few of their creative blends, including Midwinters’ Night Dram (rye finished in port and French oak barrels), Yippee Ki Yay (rye aged in vermouth and Syrah barrels), and Campfire (a rustic, smoky blend of bourbon, rye and scotch).

Plus, we have rarities from some big names, including Knob Creek 2001 14-year Bourbon, Wild Turkey Master’s Keeper 17-year Bourbon, Redemption 7-year Barrel Proof Rye, Jameson 18-year Irish Whiskey, and Laphroig Lore Scotch.

Free Friday Tasting: Whiskey & Wine

‘Tis the season for whiskey. We’re tasting our very own single barrel selection today, along with a fine red wine, at our Free Friday Tasting, 4-6 p.m. Stop by for a sip!

bourbon

Black Shoe Hospitality Single Barrel 1792 Bourbon – We’re on our third single barrel selection, because we love having our name on a bourbon. We picked this one out specifically to be a crowd-pleaser – it’s easy-drinking, yet complex – great to drink alone or in a cocktail.

It’s a tawny caramel color, and hits you with sweet honey and vanilla, and then some orange and spice. It finishes nice and woody, but not too oaky. It’s bottled at 93.7 proof, so a little hotter than usual but smooth enough that you can still enjoy it straight.

wine

Portada, Winemaker’s Selection Tinto Red, Red Blend, Lisboa, Portugal 2011 – This is a deep, dark wine with rock-solid structure you’d expect from a more expensive wine. Plum and berry fruit flavor is balanced by lively acidity. Very pleasant, and elegant, with a medium body. It’s a Wine Enthusiast 90-point Best Buy, if you’re into that sort of thing.

This is a great reminder of the value of Portuguese wine and its lesser-known varietals (it’s a blend of Tinta Roriz, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon, Caladoc, Castelão, Pinot Noir and Touriga Nacional).

Enjoy our Free Friday Tasting, whether you’re buying a case or just in for a taste, 4-6 p.m. at Story Hill BKC

Free Friday Tasting: Beaujolais, Baby! and a nice Italian white

img_5494

We pulled the cork on the very first wine of the vintage year 2016 yesterday. Beaujolais Nouveau is traditionally released on the third Thursday of November – it’s an unofficial kickoff to the holiday season. A signal that says “It’s time to drink some wine.”

Stop by and try one of the big names in Beaujolais Nouveau, plus a delightful Italian white for Thanksgiving, at our Free Friday Tasting, 4-6 p.m.

img_5500

Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais Nouveau, Gamay, Beaujolais AOC, France 2016 — This wine was hand-picked Gamay grapes just a few short weeks ago. Beaujolais producers started a tradition of racing from the region (which is technically in Burgundy) to bring the first wines of the harvest to Paris.

This is a bright, fresh wine that benefits from a bit of a chill. The timing couldn’t be better: it’s a great balance for Thanksgiving food. Fruity and light, it’ll refresh you when you’ve had too much turkey and cranberry sauce.

image2-4-2

Arnaldo Caprai, Grecante, Grechetto dei Colli Martani DOC, Italy 2012 — Lots of fruit, with melon, peach, and citrus, cut with nice acidity so it’s not cloying. A nice way to switch it up from a Sauv Blanc or an unoaked Chardonnay.

This would be a GREAT choice for your Thanksgiving guests who like fun white wine. If you’re having it as an aperitif before dinner, don’t be surprised if you decide to stick with it through the main course!

Chardonnay with secrets; Straight-up Shiraz

One of these wines has a twist, and the other is a straight-shooter. Free Friday Tasting, 4-6 p.m.

chardonnay

Formation, Chardonnay, Monterey County, CA 2012 — What’s the secret as to why this is so good? Well, they use a little bit of Pinot Blanc, for a rounder texture, and Grenache Blanc for a floral character.

That amps up the tropical fruit flavor classic to a Monterey County Chardonnay. You’d expect it to be hot here, and it can be, but the cool water coming off the bay gives it a unique climate. You’ll get apple, melon, and pear.

shiraz

Evens & Tate Big Squeeze, Shiraz, Australia 2014 — The Big Squeeze is a Big Wine. Well-rounded, with rich, ripe fruit, and some bold American oak.

Sources from several Australian regions, this is straightforwardly Shiraz (“Get yer SHEE-raz, here!”) Dark cherry and plum, with black pepper and spice on the finish.

A Little Chardy for the Party; Italian Red; Free Friday Tasting, 4-6 p.m.

This is what I want from wine: a white to have while raking leaves, or polishing off the last of the caramel apples. A red for hanging out on Saturday night, watching movies, and taking out pizza. Free Friday Tasting, 4-6 p.m.

chardonnay

Annabella by Michael Pozzan, Chardonnay, Napa Valley, CA 2012 — A full-flavor, medium-body Chardonnay, thanks to time in French oak. Ripe apple, mango, and pear, with a crème brûlée finish and crisp acidity. Owner/winemaker Michael Pozzan named this line in honor of his grandmother.

nerodavola

Cusumano, Nero D’avola, Sicily, Italy — A dark, ruby-red with with a fresh blackberry and plum nose. Bright and juicy, with herbal notes and a hint of cola. A moderately long finish, this is a well-made and a great bang for your buck.
